WINTERS WORLD IN PHOTOS FEATURING MIDDLESBROUGH PUSH FOR PROMOTION AS RANGERS SHOW BIG IMPROVEMENT
23rd March 2015

jeff winter
Tuesday and my planned visit to Southwell Races on the way to Derby was cancelled after we decided against running her due to a slight problem with the horse. Better to have her fully fit and wait a week than to run her when she's not 100%. A change of travelling partners saw me going with Paul and Alex from Boro's press department. Paul tries to copy Lewis Hamilton and we are at the ground more than three hours before kick off which meant a 90 minute wait for the cottage pie. News was breaking that 100 Boro fans had been rounded up in town and deported from Derby. Some hacks were quick to assume the fault lay with the fans but any chance of excessive policing?? Boro and Derby fans have history but even inside the ground the stewarding seemed excessive as the segregation tapes were heavily policed an hour before kick off.

jeff winter
The Ipro is absolutely bouncing as Derby and Boro prepare to battle it out for promotion.

jeff winter
Midweek, and another magnificent away following as 2,300 Boro fans made the journey to Derby. On Twitter some locals were having a pop at the Boro for our home attendances but whilst that is not easy to defend our away support needs no such defence as we show other teams what travelling support is all about.

The game has probably kicked off and Dewsy is downstairs tucking into his THIRD portion of cottage pie. Mind you it was nice!!

jeff winter
For the second game in a row Jelle Vossen has to change his shirt after a blood stained one has to be removed. Seems like battering anything in a red shirt is the preferred way of stopping Boro play.

Man in need of hair transplant. The man in charge of the magnificent best team in the Championship is forced to the touchline from his stand seat as once again his team are easily swept aside by the Boro. Cue jump ship and head for Tyneside!! Post match he still had the audacity to claim that his team didn't deserve to lose, of course not, but not forcing Dimi into making a save isn't really the sign of a team that wants to win a game. Mind you he couldn't ask anything more from his players because they were magnificent!! Oh and the cottage pie was magnificent and so were their supporters until they were eventually out sung by the away support. Magnificent support though!! Did I mention he said magnificent...

jeff winter
Post match at Derby and Aitor Karanka is buzzing as his side started to create a gap in the promotion race. Get in you beauty. Elsewhere Hartlepool continued their bid to make the great escape, but Rangers could only draw again. The fight for second place is slipping away, by my reckoning we could be in line to face Hibs in the playoffs and our record isn't exactly too good against them this season!

Wednesday and my weekly article in the Gazette stirred a few into responses. Emotive subject the empty seats at the Riverside. Financial reasons the main excuse and I understand it to a point but times weren't exactly easy when we had full houses in the Premier League so perhaps the quality of the opposition has something to do with it!! Thursday and out in the sunshine with my Grandson, relaxing day before a busy weekend.

jeff winter
Friday morning and on the road to Liverpool for the first of three gigs this weekend. Unfortunately that means can't get to Bournemouth. Luncheon at Anfield before an evening event in Salford.

jeff winter
Anfield in the Champions room for a luncheon on Friday for the CIBSE North west and North Wales region. The Champions League trophy might be a little out of reach for the Boro and Rangers but a double promotion back to the respective top flights would be good enough for me.

Good gig and always nice to receive feedback and appreciation after an event. Feedback from guests:

"Best event for many years."
"Really appreciated the effort and enthusiasm you put in to the job."
"The charity money you generated doubled the pot which was such a bonus."
Thanks again.

CIBSE North West and North Wales MARCH 2015

Win and automatic promotion looking odds on!! Never likely - conceded a penalty within opening minutes, no complaints when one eventually given. Second best throughout, worldie killed us off so dive from Arter to win second spot kick not vital. Could have waited another twenty seconds though to get my late goal bet up!

jeff winter
After watching the Boro game it was straight off to Victoria Park for Hartlepool v Mansfield Town and the chance of watching the miraculous attempt for Pools to stay up.

Friday night and a totally different event, less formal, would you believe a Scouting reunion with hot pot and entertainment provided by yours truly, comedian Barry York and MC Bradders, another good event though and money raised for their organisation. Saturday morning and up early, not unfortunately to make the long trek south to Bournemouth, but home to watch Boro game on TV. Then off to Hartlepool v Bournemouth before heading to Darlington to speak at Richmond Town FC's Sportsman's Dinner.

jeff winter
Entertainment at Hartlepool provided by the Mansfield boys, a crew of about forty young wanabee Hoolies baited the home fans throughout behind the defence of stewards and police.

jeff winter
Hartlepool's job made easier as Mansfield's Don Goodman look-a-like leaves the field after being red carded for trying to decapitate Bradley Walker.

jeff winter
Full time at the Victoria Ground as players and fans celebrate the third win in the week which takes Pools into striking distance of pulling off one of the greatest escapes ever. The first half wasn't a classic but the second half sprung into life and it was like a cup tie, end to end with the home side just about doing enough. No wonder Jeff Stelling went mental beside me in the press box and a normally calm Pool supporting journalist went ballistic as Pools secured all three points. You can't take Hartlepool out of the lad, Nick!!

From the game off to Darlington for my third and final Speaking engagement of the weekend. The venue the Hallgarth Counry Club, where it all began for me, around fifteen years ago. I was in the audience as a guest when the comedian didn't turn up following Emlyn Hughes' brief speech. As a favour I got up and told a few tales and now a thousand plus gigs later I'm still going strong.

The event was for Richmond Town Football Club and I was working for the first time of two gigs in a week with comedian Austin Knight. Great bunch of people but it was the old Saturday night syndrome of players having their girlfriends with them, poor lasses didn't exactly look enthralled listening to football talk!! Overall though another good night with plenty of money raised for the club.

jeff winter
Got to bed at around 1.15 am on Sunday morning after getting in from Darlington and watching a couple of Sky-Plussed races on TV, just to chill, one winner and a second. Hard to get to sleep, still hyper, so at 1.30 I'm on the internet, placing a couple of bets for the Rangers game. Have I got a problem?? Awake before the alarm, so up at 6.00am, ready for the trip to Edinburgh. Got to admit, I'm running on empty. Parked up in time for opening time at our regular Easter Road watering hole, Middletons. Half a cider to comply with Scottish drink driving laws, Greggs for a sausage roll and coffee to keep me awake during the game then around the corner and into the away end. I've never seen Rangers lose at Easter Road against Hibs, would that record be kept going? In question with news that Moshni starts!!

jeff winter
In fairness the big man played as well as I've seen him. Rangers were much better and looked organised and committed. Stuart McCall starting to work his magic??

jeff winter
Get in there, Rangers players celebrate Lee Wallace's opener at Easter Road.

jeff winter
Full time and Rangers players thank the fans. That was much better and a sign of things to come. Likely that we'll have two more game against Hibs before the season is over!!

jeff winter
Goal mouth action as Rangers press for a second goal.

jeff winter
It's all over now, 2-0 to the Rangers courtesy of Kenny Miller.

jeff winter
Not all football fans are ugly as Laura finds out as she poses next to me for a full time photo after an enjoyable lunchtime against Hibs. Just the small matter of a 160 mile drive home now. For the second day in a row a Midlands team lets me down on my Goals Galore coupon, on Saturday it was Birmingham today Wallsall. Home in time to see another losing bet, no red card in El Classico, unbelievable!!

THE WEEK AHEAD

Wednesday and hopefully an afternoon at Southwell Races watching Lady Ibrox run. On Friday I'm speaking in Loughborough before heading back north on Saturday morning to watch Hartlepool hopefully continue with their attempts at the Great Escape at the Victoria Ground.

Are you planning a Speakers Evening or fundraiser? You can be assured that as well as speaking I will give maximum help to fundraising on the evening with my auctioneering skills, contact me regarding availability on jeffwinter@jeffwinterentertainmentandmedia.co.uk.

Just a thought, nowadays many smaller organisations have stopped doing Sportmanís evenings mainly due to the economic recession and the increasing costs. If your club doesn't have the numbers to support the traditional speakers evening then why not book me for a one man show, I regularly do these, my normal After Dinner slot followed by a Q & A session and fundraising activities. I can assure you there is more than enough content to fill the night.

Have a good week.
