24th November 2014

A quiet week with the usual child minding etc led to a very busy weekend. As soon as Oliver was picked up on Thursday teatime it was off to Harrogate for the start of a busy three days.

The first event was to be speaker at the local estate agent's black tie dinner. To be honest I much prefer the more informal events but work is work and we were also trying to raise money for local charities.

Regular readers might get the impression that every gig I speak at is a roaring success and runs without problems. In the main most are well organised and make profits for the organisers clubs or charities. I have often commented that the industry is win/win for everyone concerned, a great night out for the audience, caterers, bars making their money and usually a lot of money raised for the causes also not forgetting a good income for the speakers!! Some events though are rather more demanding than others and this was going to be one of those weeks.

Away from work it was far from a smooth problem free week either. England easily overcame the Scots at Celtic Park where at a ground known for having a section of supporters that have a habit of being anti British and singing songs supporting terrorist organisations and whenever possible disrespect servicemen, some travelling English supporters retaliated with songs supported by the background of the band that abused said terrorist organisations.

Now as we all know football grounds should not be the place for anything not to do with sport but in Scotland especially that rule is regularly forgotten. Whatever the rights of wrongs it was amazing to hear that an apology was offered regarding the songs, I mean especially in the week that marked the 40th anniversary of the Birmingham pub bombings

We wouldn't want to upset those who support the perpetrators of that vile and cowardly act, would we???

Saturday lunchtime and the away end awaits the arrival of 5,000 Boro supporters.

We all know that we live in a totally over the top PC world where it doesn't take too much to upset large numbers of our society. There was plenty of that this week with the witch hunt against Ched Evans forcing Sheffield United to ditch the training facilities previously offered to their former disgraced striker. The convicted rapist who still pleads his innocence it seems will be hounded out of football by some who won't let him live his life and earn a living despite having served his time!!

Wigan's Dave Whelan decided to appoint Malky Mackay as his new manager and in so doing opened up a whole new can of worms. His comments to a media interviewer setting him up as a racist and the suggestion that he's not a fit and proper person to run a football club.

Ignorance is not a defence nowadays and most certainly there are people out there who will pounce given the merest opportunity. I haven't really expressed my views on either of these subjects because as I know from experience it just sets you up for bad press and condemnation. Freedom of speech isn't allowed nowadays which is quite ironic on the 100th anniversary of the Great War where thousands gave their lives so that we would be free!!

All over and the Boro players thank the magnificent travelling support after a below par performance at Wigan.

Anyway back to my life and a couple of enjoyable days doing what is best, namely looking after my Grandson then off to work for the weekend.

First stop Thursday night in Harrogate ending a day where I didn't stop confirming several new booking for next year. I was a bit apprehensive about the gig which was a black tie event for the local estate agent's society. Some events like these can attract for want of better descriptions, complete wankers.

In the main lovely professional people but you always get one. Poor little rich man, a chartered surveyor with a high opinion of himself and a very big mouth.

He started as the president opened the evening and it was obvious that as the drinking increased he was going to get worse. My problem was that in mixed company I couldn't really open up on the twat and give him both barrels. Never mind, we raised a couple of bags of sand for the local hospice so it was worth tolerating the tosser!!

After two weeks of eager anticipation finally Boro are set to meet Wigan on Saturday afternoon.

Friday and off to Wigan for two days of work and football. Arriving at lunchtime surely I must have been the first of the 5,000 travelling Boro supporters to hit town!! I didn't back a horse that was on tracker and of course it duly romped home at 10/1, going to be another of those days.

Off to a local cricket club in town, packed room and none of the posh highly opinionated types, very much more working class to put it mildly.

There is a saying that when it's 8.00pm in Manchester it's 1962 in Wigan, not wrong with some of the audience, one table of lively youngsters and one table of talkative pissed up meatheads both typically sat at the front of the room was always going to be a challenge.

Comedian Jamie Sutherland stuck to the task and won through in the end but it was a battle. Anyone who thinks we don't earn our money would have been well out of order on this occasion. The organisers were well pleased but it was a struggle to put it mildly.

The home end at the DW stadium on Saturday!!

Saturday and so to the match, I was doing the lounges with a lot of egg shells on the floor. Come on Jeff, no mention of Jews or Chinky's and most certainly no referral to scumbags who won't wear the poppy!!! Best behaviour no adverse publicity required today!!!

It promised to be a party atmosphere which hopefully wouldn't be overshadowed by the media interest in Messrs Whelan and MacKay, 5,000 Boro fans sure to bring a carnival atmosphere to the ground. Big fear that the old up turn in form under a new manager syndrome would help the struggling Latics.

Elsewhere hope that Rangers could peg back Hearts at Tynecastle in a game that I wish had been switched to the Sunday! I did manage to get home though on Saturday night without knowing the result from Edinburgh. Rangers ten men slipped to defeat but played well enough, nine points behind but with Hearts to play twice still its not all over by a long stretch.

The away end at the DW stadium, all 5,000 seats sold so some must still be in the pub. Red Army!!

Main regret on Saturday as I bummed about wasting time on the morning was not knowing that there was a Northern Soul museum that I could have visited. Best part about the DW Stadium is the music, quality NS from a different generation.

I was at the ground by noon and did the lounges before watching a largely disappointing Boro performance, poor in the first half, better in the second without ever really deserving more than a point. Great to see the home fans support their chairman as well, Dave Whelan has built the club up and deserves loyalty.

Team sheets and the latest product of Karanka's squad rotation policy.

Another mile crunching busy seven days. Sandwiched in between two days of looking after Oliver is Sedgefield and Wetherby Races, then a local dinner on Teesside on Friday night fooled by a trip to Mansfield on Saturday afternoon for an early evening start that sadly means I'll be missing any football. Overnight there then onward to Stockport for the annual speakers and comedians bash. No audience to entertain, just ourselves!!

Are you planning a Speakers Evening or fundraiser? You can be assured that as well as speaking I will give maximum help to fundraising on the evening with my auctioneering skills, contact me regarding availability on

Pre match meal at the DW on Saturday, It didn't explain that the shoulder of lamb would be hunk of fat with bits of meat hanging off it. Wish I hadn't missed breakfast!

Just a thought, nowadays many smaller organisations have stopped doing Sportmanís evenings mainly due to the economic recession and the increasing costs. If your club doesn't have the numbers to support the traditional speakers evening then why not book me for a one man show, I regularly do these, my normal After Dinner slot followed by a Q & A session and fundraising activities. I can assure you there is more than enough content to fill the night.

Parked up before noon at the DW Stadium on Saturday, bright sunshine rather than the monsoon of the previous evening.

My charity account for MND is still open and taking donations to try and raise funds for the society that works so hard to help people suffering from the disease and I am still hoping people will contribute. Please help me help them.

Have a good week.
