13th October 2014

Last Thursday it was tee shirts in the park but the summer is over, hats and coats are in order and entertainment transferred indoors so a visit to Noah's Ark in Thornaby for a soft play session with Oliver. He loves the trampoline so it looks as if Grandpa is going to be buying him a big one for the garden for Christmas.

Dumbarton away for the second week running in the Scottish Cup poses more ticketing problems as Rangers will again only get a miniscule number.

Tuesday and an attempt to cram in as much as possible. Firstly Gazette Towers to do the Talking Boro panel that runs in the newspaper during an international shutdown week. That meant missing the first three races at Catterick, but as it was an eight race card not too bad.

I listening to the third race as I headed for the track and backed the winner. The good luck continued as I backed the winner and got the forecast up in the first race I saw, the run ended there though as big priced unbackable winners was the order of the day. Needed my football bets to pull me out.

Arrived at Pools to see the possibilities for the manager's job arriving by the bus load. Kevin Ball, Graham Kavanagh and my pal Mark Venus who is desperate to get on the managerial ladder and a gig at his home town club would be ideal.

The match saw much changed teams with youth given its chance by the Pools' stand in gaffers. Decent game and good effort from the youngsters, penalties pending when fortunately a late Sheffield United goal secured my two bets and an overall profit for the day.

Thursday and another swimming lesson for Oliver; he's getting more confident under my tutorship.

Tuesday night and its the Paint Pot Cup at Victoria Park as Hartlepool entertain Sheffield United.

Couldn't be arsed to watch the England v San Marino game live but watched the highlights of this meaningless pointless game. Don't even think goal difference will matter as England should romp the league then fail in the finals, AGAIN!!!

Friday and Brucie bonus as I met Sam and Oliver on her day off and after visiting the park we went to the local garden centre where the Christmas display is already up and it fascinates the little fellah. Returned home to watch the Under 21's, hopefully with a Boro interest as both Bamford and Gibson were in the squad.

Full time at Victoria Park on Tuesday, thank goodness not another penalty shoot out to endure.

No football this weekend and as it happened it would have been difficult to fit a game in anyway as the Methil & Buckhaven Rangers Supporters Bus 40th anniversary Dinner was starting at 5.30pm! More drinking time the obvious reason!!

Saturday without football just isn't right especially when we are foregoing our passion so that one sided mismatched supposed internationals can take place. However I was busy as I drove the 205 miles to the Kingdom Of Fife for the 40th anniversary dinner dance of the Methil and Buckhaven RSC.

Arrived at my second home at 3.45 to be told we were out for 4.30. Pre drinks at Burts Bar before hitting the community centre for a 5.30 start. The lads had worked wonders and the hall was resplendent in red, white and blue.

Tuesday afternoon and the Indian summer is over at Catterick; its going Baltic as the sparsely populated terraces enjoy an afternoon's racing.

Scott and the lads had worked so hard on every detail. Their own commemorative lapel badge along with a labelled miniature bottle of whisky for every guest. We were to be entertained by Roses and Drums and also Number1Son. My job was to host the evening which was simple enough, the hardest part being to go steady on the vodka so I remained fairly sensible on the mike.

A souvenir programme had been produced which I had contributed a page of my thoughts on this wonderful group of people. It also had a look back to prices fashions and music in 1974 as opposed to now. Many changes but not on Leven where it's still 1974!!

Not the best view of top amateur Ms S Brotherton as she mounted Rat Catcher before the last race at Catterick on Tuesday before I headed off for the football at Victoria Park.

We had three Barcelona bears as our guests, David Smith, Colin Stein and Willie Johnson. Absolute gentlemen and their presence took the occasion to an incredible high. The following seven hours passed quickly before a post event cool down in Burts bar!!

I've got to say that 40 years ago, when the supporter's bus was launched with a trip to Dunfermline, I'm sure that the organisers wouldn't have envisaged that forty years later it would still be going strong. There are new younger members joining and it will outlive the present crop of loyal supporters. Just like the Rangers it will never die.

Would you believe it, beginning of October and the local garden centre have their Christmas display on show. That means hours of Oliver cuddling polar bears, Father Christmas's and the like.

Monty and Adam and partners were there from Nithsdale loyal, the Maja and David from the District along with friends from Glenrothes but the locals were there in numbers, suits that hadn't seen the light of day since their owners' last court appearance!! Plenty of bang tidy ladies as well. The Rangers family out in force. Wonderful people, thanks as always for making me part of your lives - WATP.

Sunday morning and mine host cooked me breakfast, perhaps as an apology as he'd not put the immersion heater on so no hot water. Going to have to get better digs next time!!

The hall is bedecked and ready, let party commence.

Monday and Wednesday racing at Sedgefield and Wetherby, Tuesday and Thursday looking after Oliver. Friday working at the Riverside, a round journey of 20 miles which makes a nice change.

With Boro at Brighton on the Saturday and me having a gig in Musselburgh on Sunday lunchtime it's likely that I will go and watch Hartlepool v Luton on Saturday. Then Sunday a luncheon in Musselburgh.

Scott has splashed the cash for square sausage slices and a natty little number with black pudding in the middle. Treat like royalty in Buckhaven for Sunday breakfast.

Are you planning a Speakers Evening or fundraiser? You can be assured that as well as speaking I will give maximum help to fundraising on the evening with my auctioneering skills, contact me regarding availability on

Just a thought, nowadays many smaller organisations have stopped doing Sportman's evenings mainly due to the economic recession and the increasing costs. If your club doesn't have the numbers to support the traditional speakers evening then why not book me for a one man show, I regularly do these, my normal After Dinner slot followed by a Q & A session and fundraising activities. I can assure you there is more than enough content to fill the night.

jeff winter
I join real Rangers legends Colin Stein, Willie Johnson And David Smith on Saturday evening in Methil. Altogether now, "In Barcelona"...

My charity account for MND is still open and taking donations to try and raise funds for the society that works so hard to help people suffering from the disease and I am still hoping people will contribute. Please help me help them.

Have a good week.

An early start on Saturday evening as the brilliant Drums and Roses get the evening started in Methil for the 40th Anniversary Dinner of the Methil and Buckhaven RSC.

Number1Son entertains the diners on Saturday evening in Fife.
