WINTERS WORLD FEATURING MIDDLESBROUGH AND RANGERS CONTINUE THEIR GOOD STARTS AND AN EPIC AT ANFIELD
24th September 2014

Thursday and after a day looking after the little fellah it was off to the theatre. At just shy of two years of age his hero's aren't yet footballers, unless that is Fireman Sam plays Sunday league. His day was made when the local lads lifted him up into their engine. Thanks guys, it's priceless to see his smile.

While the last votes were being cast I was enjoying the Lion King in Sunderland. Awake early to the wonderful news that the Union was still intact. Rule Britannia, God Save the Queen.

Off to Glossop, surely the hardest place in the UK to drive to on a Friday afternoon!! The delays didn't bother me too much as I received a call confirming a ticket for Alloa and a 16/1 winner and 40/1 second made it a profitable if long journey.

Article continues below...

On the night it was a dinner working with old colleagues Austin Knight and James H Reeve.

The venue was a local cricket club, their eleventh annual dinner and a sell out. Unusual in that no auction just speakers, dinner raffle and a couple of games of Irish bingo. Picked up my local man Austin and with no auction commitments was able to have a couple.

Good night but wary of long day of driving. Managed six hours kip, that's very good for me, then up on Saturday for 500 miles worth of driving.

Oh, by the way, Salmond has done the honourable thing and quit, sad loss, NOT!!

Tuesday and I watched the Liverpool v Boro Capital One Cup tie sat next to my old adversary John Aldridge who was working for Radio City.

Up the road sharply and met Cameron at Hamilton services for a coffee then up to Alloa. My ticket was in the Gazebo Stand which saw me trapped next to a guy who wanted to ask questions and more annoyingly close to a loud mouthed wanker who just wanted to shout abuse at any Rangers player and the manager. I don't know why some people bother to go??

In fairness it wasn't too clever but Rangers are usually drastic on the plastic so it shouldn't have been too much of a surprise. At least the late equaliser saved our long unbeaten away run.

As the game progressed another mouth close by started bemoaning the number of long balls and crosses to Boyd and Daly. What were we supposed to do, use their pace on the deck!!

Its sell-out Saturday cos Rangers are in town; that doesn't happen in the SPL does it?

At the Riverside Boro were continuing to gain momentum with their third win in eight days. I should have headed home but at least a new ground had been visited!!

Sunday and a sit in front of the TV day with a couple of bets on the football. Plenty of goals and late ones are usually a sign of a successful days punting. The live games were good to watch as well as win money on. Late goals singles and doubles and the draw between City and Chelsea were very profitable. Good old Frank!!

The female assistant referee shows her derriere to the Gazebo as she stretches before performing in Rangers game at Alloa on Saturday afternoon.

United were brilliant and terrible within the same game, mind you my old mate Mark Clattenburg proved that all refs aren't United fans. Incredible that he didn't penalise Vardy for his battering of Raphael!

Monday and a day with the little fellah then Tuesday and off to another game, as it turned out not just another game!!

In almost 50 years of following the Boro and watching and officiating in thousands of games I thought I'd seen everything.

Firstly my decision to go to Anfield instead of Falkirk was most certainly the right decision. Rangers progressed to the quarter-finals of the Cup, Boro dipped out but that didn't tell the story.

jeff winter
Ready to go, its the big one, Alloa v Rangers on Saturday afternoon.

Yet again the Boro fans were out in force and in good voice, the ground was packed, in itself unusual for a Capital One Cup tie, young teenagers making their debuts for both sides but take nothing away - this was Anfield, Liverpool and what we witnessed will remain in the memory for generations.

Boro more than matched their illustrious opponents both on and definitely off the pitch. It was good to be back at a ground that I loved reffing at, also to see so many familiar faces. I always got on well with people at the club.

jeff winter
Scotland on Saturday afternoon, the question is would Rangers get stung??

The locals knew they were fortunate to get to extra time and had Adam Clayton's late shot not rebounded off the post then even that wouldn't have been necessary.

The odds on a Boro victory had dropped from 15/2 to 5/1 and thousands, myself included, were very unfortunate not to collect.

Extra time and the Kop finally woke up, our keeper made his first saves of the night and it looked as if Suso's goal would do for us. Never say die and an added time penalty took the game into penalties.

Thirty spot kicks, only one off target and only two saved, incredible, pulsating and sums up what we all love about the game.

jeff winter
Romantic football setting in Clackmannanshire. Instead of the Riverside I chose Alloa, bad choice as it turned out on quality of game.

Finally left Anfield at 11.30pm, shit with the roadworks on the M62, finally home by 2.30am, a very large vodka and a couple of races to watch on the TV before retiring knackered but very proud!!

jeff winter
Some wanted independence, the need might have been for spelling lessons!! A van I parked up behind in Alloa; this guy is good for EMERGERNCIES!!

THE WEEK AHEAD

Thursday looking after Oliver then on Friday down to London for the weekend to see my daughter and take in Boro's game at Charlton, Monday up the road for Rangers v Hibs, Tuesday Sedgefield Races followed by Boro v Blackpool. Happy days.

Are you planning a Speakers Evening or fundraiser? You can be assured that as well as speaking I will give maximum help to fundraising on the evening with my auctioneering skills, contact me regarding availability on jeffwinter@jeffwinterentertainmentandmedia.co.uk.

Just a thought, nowadays many smaller organisations have stopped doing Sportman's evenings mainly due to the economic recession and the increasing costs. If your club doesn't have the numbers to support the traditional speakers evening then why not book me for a one man show, I regularly do these, my normal After Dinner slot followed by a Q & A session and fundraising activities. I can assure you there is more than enough content to fill the night.

My charity account for MND is still open and taking donations to try and raise funds for the society that works so hard to help people suffering from the disease and I am still hoping people will contribute. Please help me help them.

Have a good week.

Thursday and the local firemen make a little boy very happy, not quite Fireman Sam, but Oliver is made up!!

jeff winter
Its all over and Boro players and fans show mutual admiration. Even the Liverpool fans in the main stand joined in the applause. Proud to be a Boro fan tonight!!

jeff winter
Full time at Anfield and a deserved draw for Boro, extra time not really wanted though ahead of Saturday's game at Charlton.

jeff winter
Boro fans show their respect to the victims of the Hillsborough disaster.

jeff winter
Another midweek game, live on the TV but that didn't stop Boro selling out and over 2,500 headed to Merseyside on Tuesday evening to, in the main, out sing the Kop.

jeff winter
Teenage debutants but still a massive match at Anfield on Tuesday evening.

jeff winter
"You're only here to see the Boro!!!" Fair play to the Scousers - a full house to watch Tuesday's Capital One Cup tie at Anfield.

jeff winter
Always a humbling experience to visit Anfield and reflect that there but for the grace of God go I. Anyone of my generation experienced weekly terrace surges and crushes, thankfully unlike the 96 we lived to tell the tale.
