JEFF THE REF REMINISCES ABOUT MANCHESTER CITY

I first reffed City at St James' Park, a game which saw them beaten 3-1. Their manager at time was the late, great Alan Ball, who I recall wasn't too happy as his side picked up six yellow cards, including former Boro player Peter Beagrie. To make matters worse, defender Richard Edgehill also saw red.

Towards the end of the season they were involved in a relegation battle at Maine Road against Southampton. They won 2-1 but the cards were busy again with the teams sharing eight yellows and Saints Gordon Watson seeing red.

My next City game was a Division One derby at Edgeley Park, against Stockport County. Forget segregation, I think City had more fans than the home side.

County's Tony Dinning and our very own Jamie Pollock were both working their tickets, so in an attempt to prevent further problems I booked the pair of them. They asked me what I was booking them for. I replied "Nothing". It worked though as they started playing football instead of winding each other up.

City then quickly progressed to the Premier League. Before they left Maine Road, I reffed them against Spurs where despite the dismissal of Cristian Ziege Spurs managed a 3-2 victory.

After moving to The Etihad I recall one game against Fulham where I disallowed penalty appeals for both teams. To be honest watching MOTD that night I cringed as both with the benefit of hindsight looked 'stonewall', as the pundits say.

I had the pleasure of reffing the Manchester derby once at Old Trafford, a 4-2 FA Cup defeat and no doubt defeat was eased for City followers as they witnessed Gary Neville being dismissed following an altercation with Steve MacManaman.

My favourite City game though was their 8-1 defeat at The Riverside in Sven Goran Eriksen's last game in charge. That couldn't happen again, could it?
